Excel Mite Academy
Excel Mite Academy is a program where players 7 years and under can lay the foundation for a successful hockey Journey!!! There is a new initiative in America to grow hockey, so the Hockey Hut Training Center has designed the ultimate program for young players and families.The governing body of hockey in America (USA Hockey) has researched and studied hockey development and has recommended an all “cross-ice” (Small Games) approach to skill building.The Hockey Hut, operational since 1997 has been running small area skills sessions for all ages and has seen the development of the area’s finest players for over 27 years.The small area concept works when the drill progressions are fun, fast and instructed by professionals. This is what we will provide for your skater with the addition of “Team” practice development and game concepts!!!
Head Coaches:
Ron Kuhl In 1993 Ron started coaching hockey in the Capital Region NY. He has spent the last 26 years coaching, instructing and developing players at every age level from youth to pro.
From 1995-97 Ron worked to create the foundation of his player development and skills programs. In 1997 Ron founded Excel Hockey Inc. and became an owner of the Hockey Hut Training Center. This allowed him to train players throughout the entire year.
Cameron Kuhl Cam grew up in Clifton Park NY and 2024-25 will be Cam’s third year as the Director of Hockey Operations and Training at the Hockey Hut. Cam played his Junior Hockey in the USPHL, BCHL, and the NAHL, and College hockey at SUNY Plattsburgh. He is a tremendous teacher of the individual skills and Hockey IQ necessary to become a great hockey player.
Teagan Ketchum Teagan Ketchum has been involved with the Hockey Hut from the very beginning. Teagan graduated from the very first ever Learn to Skate program run at the Hut. She went on to play hockey locally in the Ice Cats program and helped start the girl’s high school team at Albany Academy. From there she played Division l Hockey at Sacred Heart University. Throughout her college career, Teagan has run many programs in the off-season at the Hockey Hut including semi-private sessions and Hockey Camps! Teagan has been coaching at the Hut since 2018 and has brought great energy to everything that she has done!
To love the game
There needs to be reasons. In the Excel Mite Academy program, it is our mission to make sure kids love the game and have fun while advancing their skills. Every practice will be small team skill sessions and instructed by our professional staff with the help of a volunteer assistant coach. Puck touches, skating techniques and small games will be employed to keep things fresh and fun!!! We will encourage future coaches to help on ice but the program is designed by Hockey Hut Owner Ron Kuhl and instructed by the Hockey Hut full time professional staff. The maximum player/coach ratio will be 6:1.
We want the kids on the ice and having fun!!! This will grow the love of the sport and allow them to take their game to new levels!!! The environment we will create will bring that love and passion for the game out!!! The more they love the game, the more they’ll play. And the more they play, the better they’ll get.”
